Rock Penstemon
The Baccharis-leaf penstemon is a densely branched subshrub that grows in rocky slopes, limestone crevices, and bluffs between 2000 and 7000 feet. It is found in Texas's Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos regions and extends south into Mexico. The plant has herbaceous growth above ground and becomes woody at the base. It can be upright or sprawling in shape. The leaves of the Baccharis-leaf penstemon are 1-2 inches long, thick, smooth, or fuzzy, and have small teeth along the margin. The plant produces inch-long scarlet flowers that bloom from spring through summer, opening along the stalk. The limestone ledges provide the required sharp drainage for the plant to thrive.
